aura gallery hong kong is pleased to present Black and White - Exhibition by Roger Ballen and Fun MingChip , from December 13 2007 to January 13 2008.

The art creation between Roger Ballen and Fun MingChip divers in forms and aesthetics while their concepts and approaches toward arts are indeed related. Roger Ballen, one of the most renowned contemporary photographers, took his subjects through the progress of documentary but made the images like Joel Peter Witkin’s photographic theatres. By the ambiguous realms, Ballen outlines the most essential but complicated emotions of human beings. In the meantime, Fun MingChip, one of the most influential contemporary Chinese painters, utilizes the traditional bush and ink but construct various concept of Chinese painting and calligraphy. Through the tropology and metonymy of traditional aesthetics, Fun presents the power of reforms.

In Black and White, works of Ballen and Fun can be perceived that the artists have the same concepts and approaches toward arts. By the traditional forms(B&W photography/Chinese paintings) and classic aesthetics(documentary/ bush and ink), the two artists explore the limitation of contemporary reflection and sensation – Ballen exposes the extreme condensation of social and personal consciousness while Fun reveals the self examination of historical and individual existences.

Roger Ballen was born in New York City in 1950 and has lived in South Africa for almost 30 years. In 1980’s Ballen began to document the inhabitants in South Africa and developed his own style of photography. In 2000 and 2005, Phaidon Press published his third and fifth photobooks, Outland and Shadow Chamber, and affirmed the artist’s position in the art history. aura gallery shanghai held Roger Ballen Solo Exhibition and introduced the great artist to China in 2005 as well.

Fun MingChip was born in Guangdong China in 1951 and raised in Hong Kong. Fun moved to New York City in 1977 and has been living and working in New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taipei. Fun held his solo exhibitions in Taipei Fine Arts Museum and other important galleries in New York, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Ms. Adrienne Eng.
